Opportunities are a critical part of NobleHour’s foundation, sharing the variety of ways in which students can engage with the community, and a necessary precursor to Hour tracking. As you begin to set up NobleHour, remember there are many ways Opportunities can get listed in your Community.

It is likely that stakeholders across campus already have relationships established with various organizations - your volunteer or service-learning office may have a list, or you could identify them by looking through applications for awards/recognitions where partners may be identified.

Strategy 1: Invite your Community Partners to Join NobleHour
You can invite your community partners to set up a free Organization Profile on NobleHour, which combines the exposure of a Facebook Page, the customizability of a website, and the simplicity of a business card, on a network of motivated individuals looking to improve the world. It’s a win-win!

Once they are NobleHour members, they can Create Opportunities for others to serve with their Organization. Community Partners can then Contribute those Opportunities to your institution’s NobleHour Community (and any others in the NobleHour Network!), which would make the Opportunity visible to your Members. Note that all Opportunities submitted to a Community must be approved by a Community Administrator before they will appear to your Members.

Be sure to make it clear why they are being invited to join NobleHour and how it will benefit them. We have created a printable PDF you could share with them, which lists out the benefits of having a free community organization profile on NobleHour. Ask your account manager for a copy.

TIP: If your community partner doesn’t have the resources or the desire to set up a free profile, they can verify hours by email. Ask your Account Manager about this feature, or search our Help Center for details at http://support.noblehour.com

Strategy 2: Host Opportunities on Behalf of your Community Partners
Sometimes institutions elect not to involve their community partners in NobleHour. In these cases, institutions can host Opportunities on their partners’ behalves.

If this option is best for your institution, keep the following in mind:

  • If your institution hosts the Opportunity, then there will be little Community Partner data to analyze in your Community Administrator reports. Each Opportunity will belong to one Organization - your institution! (vs. the individual Community Partners that are actually requesting volunteers).
  • This strategy works best when verification from community partners is not required. If your institution hosts the Opportunity, then when students submit Hours for verification, you, as the Opportunity Host/Organizer, will be contacted for verification (not the Community Partner).

TIP: A common convention is for Community Administrators to include the name of the Community Partner in the title of the Opportunity. 

Strategy 3: Use Personal Opportunities to Capture Student Service
While you may work hard to ensure many Opportunities are available to your students in your NobleHour Community, it is likely that students will want to track Hours with an Opportunity that is not yet posted in NobleHour.

In cases like these, students can add their own Opportunities to NobleHour after they volunteer. They will enter details about the community partner contact information, which will be used to send an email to that partner asking them to verify the students’ Hours.

If this option is best for your institution, keep the following in mind:

  • If multiple students serve with the same Opportunity, but each track their hours via a Personal Opportunity, then your Community Administrator reports will show three separate Opportunities hosted by three separate community partners (vs. aggregating all hours served by multiple students with one Opportunity hosted by one community partner)

While we recommend choosing a strategy as you are planning your rollout, keep in mind that your Community may see a combination of all three strategies as Members and partners begin to interact with NobleHour. This is okay, and it is helpful to have an understanding of the different options and their implications.
